Refretting a Gibson Les Paul Custom

West Music Coralville's Bruce Vanderschel tackles a refret on a vintage 1978 Gibson Les Paul Custom. The guitar had previously been refretted with stainless steel frets many years ago, and the luthier unfortunately cut through the binding during the process--along with using epoxy to secure the frets. Bruce walks us through the refret process from start to finish, including removing the old fretwire, prepping the fretboard, patching the chipping (which was more than normal, due to the way the frets were inlaid in the original refretting process), sanding, and finally installing, shaping and dressing the frets. Bruce has almost four decades of experience in repair at West Music Coralville, and is a go-to guy for many players in the midwest.
