Part 1 of 2 videos featuring Red Cedar Hiking Trail at Giant City State Park in Southern Illinois during a two day overnight backpacking trip with my girlfriend. Directions to the Red Cedar Hiking Trail at Giant City State Park: https://tinyurl.com/y5tqckds Giant City State Park Red Cedar Hiking Trail Q & A: 1. How rugged in this trail? This is a very rugged trail with various creek crossings, downed trees from time to time that require you to get off trail to move around them, rolling hills and various types of hiking conditions. There are many slick rock spots on this trail that you need to look for and be careful around, 2. How long is this trail and is it a loop? This is a LOOP trail of about 12 miles. I suggest going counter-clockwise for the best results. There is a primitive campground in the middle of the loop with picnic tables, fire rings, trash cans and restrooms. The campground has no water. 3. Are there signs or blazes along this trail? Yes, most of the blazes consist of white diamonds with red circles or red/black striped ribbons in an area near the campground. 4. Any suggestions? Check in with the welcome center before going for maps and information. There is a cost of $8 per vehicle to park and camp along the Red Cedar Trail. Put the voucher in your window so the night ranger will see that you've paid. Bring plenty of water with you as there is no water at the campground and the creeks are very rain dependent. During the summer months, expect the trail to be very grown up. Early spring, fall and early winter is the best time to use this trail.
