This is a recording made on an inexpensive cassette recorder sometime during the summer of 1976. I had just completed seven years of study under the guidance of Dr. Lalmani Misra, two at the University of Pennsyvania and five in Varanasi at the Banaras Hindu University, where I was awarded the M.Mus (sitar). The photos posted with the recording show members of the first sitar class Dr. Misra taught at the University of Pennsylvania. Also appearing is a photo of the late Dr. Harold S. Powers, who was responsible for bringing Lalmani Misra and Ishwar Lal Misra to teach at the University of Pennsylvania in 1969. A comparison with later recordings excerpted from more recent concerts that are posted on YouTube reveals the significant transformation of style after becoming a disciple (shishya) of Pandit Ravi Shankar.
