Hundreds of protesters marched in Muzaffarabad, in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir on Sunday to mark what they call "Black Day", in observance of the day India occupied Kashmir 67 years ago. The protest, organised by the United Jihad Council, saw protesters chanting slogans such as "Our fight will continue until Kashmir is free." Other demonstrators held placards, one of which was reading "Jihad will continue for Kashmiri brothers." The protesters marched through the streets of Muzaffarabad, northern Pakistan. "The people of Kashmir, their youth and refugees want India's forcible occupation to finish by Jihad," said Syed Salah-Ul-Din, Supreme Commander of Hizbul Mujaheedin and Chairman of United Jihad Council. Anti-India sentiment runs deep in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, where separatist groups are fighting for independence or merger with Pakistan. Both India and Pakistan claim Kashmir in its entirety, with each administering a part of it. India also accuses Pakistan of arming and training rebels who have been fighting in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. Pakistan denies giving any backing to the rebels beyond moral and diplomatic support. India and Pakistan also fought wars in 1947 and 1965 over their rival claims to the Himalayan territory, and have regularly sparred over the heavily militarised Line of Control that divides the territory between them. Serious fighting also erupted in 1999, when the Pakistani army and Pakistan-backed rebels occupied mountaintops on the Indian side in the eastern Kargil region of Kashmir.
