A few words about the composition:
Prokofiev began working on this concerto in 1913, when he wrote a theme with variations which then he set aside.
The piece was finished in 1921, the premier of which was given in December 1921 with Prokofiev playing himself accompanied by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Frederick Stock. The work did not gain immediate popularity (the most popular among the other 4 concertos of the composer though). The first Soviet performance was in 1925.
One of the most important aspects of this concerto is the active part of the orchestra and the balance between it and the soloist. Another intersting fact is that Prokofiev himself made the first recording of the piece in 1932 with the LSO conducted by Piero Coppola and it is the only recording that exists with the composer performing one of his pieces.
