Varvarka Street in Kitay-gorod is one of the most historic streets in central Moscow.
The street has a number of preserved buildings, booth secular and religious. Although, numerically, the street begins from Red Square, I begin my walk from the site of the ancient Barbarian Gate. Close to the Gate was the Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist, followed soon after by the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God. Further down we pass the Romanov Boyars chambers and a photo of Emperor Nicholas II coming out of the building.. Just beyond is the ancient Znamensky Monastery and the Church of Maxi, the Blessed. Finally, we see the Middle Trading Rows before entering Red Square next to the Cathedral of the Intercession on the Moat - popularly named St. Basil's Cathedral
