President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday to grant full clemency and a pardon to former San Francisco 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo, a billionaire who once pleaded guilty to participating in a gambling fraud case. In 1998, DeBartolo pleaded guilty to one felony charge of failing to report a bribery attempt by former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards while DeBartolo was bidding for a riverboat gambling license. Edwards had tried to extort DeBartolo for $400,000 in exchange for the license. Advertisement As part of his guilty plea, DeBartolo testified against Edwards during the 2000 trial, but avoided jail time while serving two years of probation. The National Football League fined DeBartolo $1 million and suspended him for the 1999 season. However, he reached a settlement that transferred control of the team to his sister, Denise DeBartolo York, and her husband, John York. DeBartolo previously requested a pardon from both Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, and but was denied both times. Under DeBartolo’s ownership, the 49ers won 5 Super Bowls. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016.
