On May 13th 2011 the School of Medicine at University College Cork hosted the first 'Prep For Med' day for 80 invited school going students, giving them a unique opportunity to experience what it is like to be a medical student. In the morning students visited the Clinical Skills Department at the UCC School of Medicine where they learned about topics such as resuscitation, taking blood pressure and first aid. In the afternoon students travelled to Cork University Hospital where they were addressed by a number of speakers including: Dr Margaret Bolster, Assistant State Pathologist, who spoke about investigating a crime scene, and Professor Stephen Cusack, Professor of Emergency Medicine at CUH, who spoke on popular TV medical dramas and discussed just how realistic they are. Students got an opportunity to watch live robotic surgery and were also introduced to the world of medical ethics when surgeon Louise Kelly hosted a discussion on tough medical ethical dilemmas.
