Playboy magazine will feature its first ever transgender playmate in its 64-year history. 26-year-old French model, Ines Rau, made history as Playboy’s first transgender playmate to feature as its centrefold in the November-December 2017 issue. Rau has appeared in the magazine before in 2014, but this time she will have a full pictorial and centrefold.
Ines has also appeared in Vogue Italia and campaigned for Balmain. According to Rau, Hugh Hefner personally chose her to be the magazine’s first transgender playmate before he died in September. Rau said she didn’t identify as transgender for a long time, but she has now realised “you should just be who you are”.
The decision has been met with some backlash. People on social media websites have criticised Ines for being a man who posed as a woman to feature in Playboy. Adult star Jenna Jameson has also slammed Ines for similar reason.
While Rau is the first transgender Playmate, she isn’t the first transgender woman to appear in the magazine. Bond girl Caroline ‘Tula’ Cossey posed for Playboy in 1981.
