On April 23rd 2018 I went to London to attend the Unrestricted View Film Festival and watch the opening film "Pickups".
Pickups is the fourth feature film of the wonderful Jamie Thraves and starring Aidan Gillen.
It is a sort of mockumentary about an actor called Aidan who is suffering from insomnia, back trouble and the breakdown of his marriage. Aidan finds solace in a number of strangers he picks up, although he's now concerned someone is stalking him. Work is getting on top of him too, he murdered a couple of people last week and he still has more people to kill.
The film blurs the line between reality and fiction and even more fiction within the fiction - and lots of it is quite hard to tell apart. If you like films that mess with your mind in terms of having some scenes where it's not too obvious what's actually going on, you would most likely enjoy Pickups.
Also it is a definite must-watch for every fan of Aidan Gillen. It's pretty personal and has lots of real elements in it - but it's up to the audience to figure out what's real and what's not.
Right before the screening there was this small Q&A with director Jamie Thraves and editor Phil Bowman held by festival director James Wren.
When it had just started, I spontaniously decided to record it - so I missed to record the very beginning. But there is not much missing anyways.
The cut in the end is rather harsh, because it felt more important to give them some much deserved applaus rather than keep filming.
Sorry for the shaky cam (I was so damn excited) and the poor picture quality, but I guess what really matters is the sound and that should be decent enough.
Enjoy!
