This composition, Piano Concerto No. 4 ‘Arctic Symphony’, is performed by the composer on the piano (James Cozens), and the CMA (Chiltern Music Academy) Symphony Orchestra on the 30th of June, 2018.
The composition represents a recent expedition trip with my family to Greenland and the high arctic, and it reflects on the incredible beauty and grandeur of the landscapes, the perilous temperatures and conditions, and the exhilarating excitement of the adventure into the unknown!
The work features numerous elements of this expedition, including the journey, through relentless arctic storms and towering waves, the spotting of the first land (Greenland) through the sea mist, and the awe inspiring sail through the tranquil and strikingly beautiful glacier-capped Fjords.
Through synaesthesia, which in my case means that each chord is associated with a different colour or mood, many different landscapes and experiences are portrayed vividly. For instance, taking the first 4 chords used in the piece (which are then constantly alluded to throughout), the first chord, Db (major 7), to me is evocative of Green, Brown and yellow (the tundra and sun). The C in the chord (the major 7) induces clear white (glaciers and icebergs). The Second chord, A (major 7), produces a deep green and blue, reminiscent of the tundra and sea, and the third chord, F# min7, produces yellow and a hint of orange (the sun and reflections in the water). The final chord, D major 7 (#5), induces a mixture of red and purple (the dusk and the deep sea). The main melody (which is presented in various variations throughout) weaves continually between these colours and chords, painting the various Greenland landscapes experienced during the journey.
Another prominent example is in the middle section, where a vibrant sunset is experienced. The tranquil start to this section combines both the deep blue of G minor and the pure white of C major simultaneously to paint a sky. These combined chords alternate with Eb major (a deep red) and F major (peach and light red) chords, representing the approaching sunset. The piece gradually moves to Db then eventually Ab minor7. Ab minor7 is a vivid mix of purple, dark red and dark blue, which is reminiscent of dusk over the glacier-capped Fjords.
The piece then gradually returns to the beginning theme and key of Db for the final dramatic finish as the expedition comes to an end.
