Persian classical music played by ethnomusicologists Dr. Jean During on tar and Dr. Lloyd Miller on zarb at a concert during a scholastic conference at University of Utah in Salt Lake City. On this video Dr. Miller was playing minimally on zarb because he wanted Dr. during's excellent tar to be prominent. A couple of posts over the years have accused him of playing incorrectly because he uses his left hand for the low dum sounds. Being left handed, Miller prefers to do the important beats with his left. Master Rajabi plays totally on the left and no one cares, so Miller doesn't care if he has a peculiar style accessing concepts from Afghan and Indian percussion traditions. It was under the influence of exacting western classical music that one type of zarb technique has been enforced on everyone, years ago it was free for everyone to play however they wished like it has always been in Afghanistan and other countries. For better examples of Dr. Miller's zarb playing see Azar Hashemi on the DoctorLloydMiller site and Drum Duels on the LloydDocMiller site.
