Merry Christmas! and Happy New Year!
Here it is! As many slimline pens made using ONE skateboard. I tried my best to show you several different patterns you can create using just one skateboard. Horizontal lines, vertical lines, 45 degree tilt, chevron, and what I'd like to call "arrow". It's a quick and easy way to batch out as many pens you can. This whole process took 3 days with filming. (Could be done in a day)
YES I FORGOT TO PUT MY RIVING KNIFE. I'm sure you'll give me a lecture on it but spare me the pain, I learned my lesson, it's back on. Relax. Just be careful and be aware of your tools.
Maybe you don't have access to recycled skateboards. Well luckily, Rockler sells something called "Spectraply" which are laminates of different colored veneers which gives similar effects to what skateboards offer. I know it's not as special as skateboard but it'll be one unique pen and a great gift for anyone!
I like to spend more time sanding rather than trying to get as close to the final shape. I'd experience way too many blow out to risk that. Some of the skateboards have weak manufacturer's glue up which I can't control so it's best to treat it as fragile. I made 11 pens total for this project, and I messed up 3 pen blanks. That is to be expected so don't be discouraged, just keep going.
Sand up to 600, apply 10 coats of super thin CA glue, and wet sand up to 12000g using micro mesh padded pads. Write this down, this formula works. I used to apply medium CA glue but it takes too long to dry compare to super thin CA glue. 10 coats is more than enough. and wet sand by barely holding on to the pad, no need to hard pressure. Buff it out with any buffing compound, I used my mechanic friend's automotive buffing compound.
Use the Pen Press/Drilling Jig to assemble your pens! I messed up so many times using a quick clamp or F style clamps. You really don't want to ruin your pen during assembly, I mean just think of all that work you just put in.
Since this is my first project with Rockler, I'm hoping to make a good relationship so if you read up to this far, how about you help me out by commenting "ROCKLER I LOVE THIS CHANNEL SO MUCH!"
Thanks again! big things happening in 2019 so stay tuned!
