The girls of the village of Pureni in the Southern Highlands perform their Mali dance. In the past the boys dressed up like girls and performed this dance (Igrigija) but today the girls do it. This video was taken in August 1986, when I visited Papua New Guinea for three weeks. They paint their faces with Ambwa (yellow clay) and cover their bodies in mbawa tree oil.they wear smaller but similar headdresses as the men. it takes them most of the day to prepare the makeup, and clean it off afterwards with sand.
