If you were born and raised in New York City you’ve probably been accused of speaking with what many people call a New York accent. It comes down to using words
that are unique to New Yorkers and pronouncing other words in a way that only New Yorkers do. A group of linguists and sociologists from the City University of New York and the University of Pennsylvania have spent years compiling a catalogue of New York-isms.
Host Sheryl McCarthy welcomes one of the researchers, Cecelia Cutler, Professor of Sociology at Lehman College and a member of The New York City English Research Group, to talk about the hallmarks of the New York way of speaking.
Taped: 02-03-20
Veteran New York Newsday columnist Sheryl McCarthy speaks with accomplished women from all walks of life in this engaging half-hour series.
