Okoa Mombasa Coalition on November 8, 2019, petitioned Mombasa County Assembly to rename Mama Ngina Waterfront park. The coalition wants the assembly to conduct a forum with structured public participation to get a name that reflects the historical and cultural heritage of Mombasa – ‘Mama Ngina’ doesn’t. The coalition holds ‘Mama Ngina’ does not tell the story of the park, the place or the people. The names the park held before, and which reflected the historical and cultural heritage of Mombasa include, Ras Mzimli, Tuaca, and Azania Drive. Giving residents a chance to take part in the name-change will be exercising local participation for local resources – a critical mission for the movement.
