It could very well begin with "Once upon a time..." But this is a true story, a beautiful story happened at the Montreux Festival. It is about Odyssey Bogussevich, a 31 year old pianist from Moscow. A pretty lucky guy.
This frail young man who usually plays in clubs of the Russian capital with his jazz trio had a dream. He wanted to live a day at the famous jazz festival on the Lake Geneva shoreline, marked by the passage of many of his idols. After he patiently gave performances for a long time he managed to save some money and pay for an airline ticket to this place of legend.
So here he is in Montreux, but penniless. He sleeps in the gardens, manages to eat and pick up some musical notes here and there. Until he discovers a beautiful piano in the Stravinsky auditorium, a piano that keeps track the performance of musicians in the context of a competition. A key, an invitation for the next festival.
Like dozens of other pianists before him, Odyssey Bogussevich starts playing. But he does it with such conviction and fervour that the contest organizers come to shiver. Just in case, they report about the phenomenon to Emmanuel Getaz. Discovering the record and without any hesitation, No. 2 of the festival decided to promote the talent from Moscow.
Suddenly, the man, who speaks nothing but Russian, concludes one of those thick contracts as Montreux knows them, in six copies. He was offered a hotel room and some pocket money. Above all, he was invited to open the evening of the official festival scene. It is his wildest dream that he achieved. This happened yesterday at Miles Davis Hall.
