On Wednesday, New York's City Council voted 39-6 to approve a package of bills meant to establish some boundaries for transportation network companies (TNCs) such as Uber, Lyft, and Via operating in NYC, where companies have faced increased scrutiny surrounding drivers' wages and congestion issues.
The bill package will temporarily freeze new FHV licenses for Uber and TNC vehicles for a year while the city conducts further research on the industry, which has seen the number of professional drivers more than quadruple in NYC over the past few years.
