NewsNetworkToday: 08 March 2011 -- UNTV: United Nations: Liberia - On a three-day visit to Liberia where she celebrated International Women's Day, the executive director for UN Women and former president of Chile Michelle Bachelet was honoured with the distinction of Grand Band in the Star of Africa by Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.
The award is given to Liberians and foreigners who have provided distinguished service to the country.
Earlier at a joint press conference with the president, she said that education was an essential issue that was all encompassing from young girls to women and that it was one of the first priorities for her agency.
Bachelet visited the 'Totota Peace Hut' in Totota, Bong County, a women-run community court serving to resolve domestic disputes and dispense informal justice.
She saw first-hand the activities of rural women in that part of the country and noted that the agency would be building eight additional "peace huts" throughout the country.
On her arrival Sunday (7 Mar), she was greeted by government and United Nations officials along with a colourful performance by Liberia's Crusader for Peace Culture troop.
This is Bachelet's first visit as the head of the new UN Women's agency. She was appointed executive director of UN Women by the Secretary-General in September 2010.
