New Lexus ES 300H 2015, 2016 video review
We may have a stylistic first. Or, at the very least, a Lexus stylistic first. In the past, the knock against all Lexi — and the ES series in particular — was that they were bland. But, whether you decried the ES’s styling as somnolent or narcoleptic, Lexus’s entry-level luxury sedan was seen as “old school,” a pejorative aimed at both its design and its clientele. Heck, critics — especially those describing themselves as at least young at heart — even wished the ES was a little more “polarizing,” it being seemingly better to risk contempt than universal ennui.
Enter the 2016 ES. To the same basic silhouette we’ve always seen from Lexus’s Buick-cum-Toyota (the ES is based on the parent company’s Avalon), for 2016 Lexus has tacked on yet another version of its now signature “Spindle” grille. In fact, the ES’s Spindlization seems the most dramatic of all Lexi. Maybe it’s because the rest of the car is so resolutely traditional or maybe this particular rendition of the Spindle really is outsized, but, whatever the case, the front end of a 2016 Lexus ES certainly does not pass unnoticed.
I also very much approve of the ES 300h’s fuel economy. A not-so-bad 6.9 L/100 km at a semi-steady 120 km/h is fairly admirable for a technology not necessarily known for its highway frugality. Oh, to be sure, a big Audi A7 TDI, despite being bigger, more powerful and all-wheel-driven, will outclass it on the highway with a 6.5 L/100 km fuel economy reading at the same speed, but the ES literally sips fuel around town, consuming but 7.4 L/100 km
