NATO's long-standing presence in Afghanistan is coming to an end. Coalition forces handed over control over security in the country to the Afghan government. The head of the Republic Hamid Karzai confirmed that the government of Afghanistan would be taking measures to ensure security in 95 districts and 11 provinces. Thirteen districts in the province of Kandahar, where the Taliban movement was born, were handed over under the control of local security services, as well as 12 districts in the provinces of Nangarhar, Khost and Paktika along the border with Pakistan, where militants are active. NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rassmussen called the completion of this process a historic event. Next year, most of NATO troops are to be withdrawn from Afghanistan. A part of foreign troops will remain in the country to be engaged in military training for local servicemen. Will they be able to train local professionals properly? Or is the Western coalition going to return for the infinite war against terrorism?
