The 2-and-a-half minute film, shot by director Fantavious Fritz between Detroit and New Orleans a few weeks before the 2016 election, is set to audio of the allegory "Mouseland" recorded in 1960. The voice on the recording is that of Tommy Douglas, a prominent politician best known for his leadership of Canada's first democratic socialist government and for implementing the first single-payer, universal healthcare system in North America.
Though "Mouseland" was not Douglas' creation - that honor goes to his friend and fellow politician Clarence Gillis - he made it not only famous, but also his own. Though this month's Issue focuses on events in the contemporary United States, not mid-century Canada, we think Fantavious Fritz has managed to make the fable of "Mouseland" feel as modern and relevant as ever.
