Join us to take a quick look at our base kit for day hiking, at Lake Waban in the Mountain Lakes Wilderness in southern Oregon. As a minimalist, one must replace gear with skill, and technology with self-reliance. Even so, there are some things that an emergency or survival situation will not afford you the timely possibility of providing yourself. Cordage is huge, as are redundant fire starters. Rain protection, water treatment, and a plan for an unexpected overnight stay are also critical. With so much actual functionality and security in such a small package, this kit is extremely practical. And best of all, it's cheap! Of course, the primary caveat here is that no one kit can truly prepare you for every scenario, and not just for survival but meeting the basic needs of a day hike. Food definitely is a variable, as is the quantity of water you'd carry and the clothing you wear and bring. So here, you see two slight changes for this hike: no trail snack and an energy shot that we were donated. This was meant to be a flying trip, basically, in and out with little to no breaks. Had it been a full day hike, there would have been a snack or meal, and we avoid energy drinks. This was a rare exception, a "cheat day" so to speak, so do avoid those nasty energy drinks altogether.
