The БМП-3 (English: BMP-3) is a Soviet tracked amphibious infantry fighting vehicle, successor to the BMP-1 and BMP-2, which entered service with the Soviet army in 1987 and was first observed by the West in 1990. БМП stands for Боевая Машина Пехоты (transliteration: Boyevaya Mashina Pekhoty) literally meaning "Infantry Combat Vehicle"). It is also partly an APC (Armoured Personnel Carrier), capable of carrying 7 soldiers who are deployable through two 2-piece hatches on the back of the vehicle.
The BMP-3, nicknamed Troyka, is one of the most heavily armed infantry combat vehicles in service, and very well protected. Early models were powered by a 450hp engine UTD-29, but most BMP-3's are now equipped with the 500hp UTD-29M version.
