Mike Portnoy Impostor Robs Gay Men in NYC - Tales From Music

In 2003, a man named Anthony Mendez was going around NYC pretending to be Mike Portnoy, the drummer of the band Dream Theater. Many people reported encountering a drunk and drugged out Mike Portnoy in the city around this time period. However, the problems caused by Mike's impersonator were not limited to merely damaging his reputation with drunk debauchery. Reports began to come in from gay men who were picked up by Mike Portnoy at a bar or club, brought him home, then found that he had robbed them while they weren't paying attention. He also ingratiated himself to people in bands, including Chris Caffery of the band Savatage, who had even gigged with the real Mike Portnoy in the past. Eventually, however, Anthony Mendez's scam unraveled when he was made to actually play the drums.
