With the celebration of our birthday year, we recognize this as the right time to authentically express who we are, and what you already know and love about "the people's museum."
From now on, we're Mia (pronounced Mee-ah).
Over the years, as the museum began using MIA as a shorthand for its formal name, it was clear that the acronym was problematic because of its long association with "Missing in Action." Mia, on the other hand, has positive meanings in cultures all over the world: mine, my own, beloved.
We hope that everyone who visits the museum, whether for the first time or the hundredth, will truly feel that "Mia is mine."
