Later, in the early part of the 1900s, mule train shipping was a monopoly held by Mexicans in the Pacific Northwest. Under the Declaration of Intention, many Mexicans promised to become U.S. citizens if allowed to live and work here; however, during the Depression, as many as 600,000 Mexicans were deported.
