Less than 24 hours away from the NBA season and with a lot of excitement for the showdown between LeBron's Cavs and Kyrie's Celtics, I decided to make a video on a classic story about LeBron and a former NBA player that called him overrated. What started out as a war of words through the media became a much greater story once LeBron got some reinforcements from hip-hop mogul Jay-Z. It's a fun one!
"From the years between 2006 and 2008 LeBron began each postseason with a first round series with the team from Washington. Now on paper, to say it was a rivalry might sound a bit misleading as the Cavs had an 8-2 record against the Wizards but it just so happened there was a player on the Wizards that just did not see eye to eye with LeBron. This player was none other than DeShawn Stevenson. For all the casual NBA fans out there, there are only two ways you know who Stevenson is. Either you know him as that crazy NBA player who got a neck tattoo of Abraham Lincoln or the guy that had beef with LeBron."

Stevenson says 'Beef with LeBron is Over'
"There are many other storylines that will get more attention when Stevenson’s Mavericks and James’ Heat meet in the NBA Finals. But the rap star-studded back and forth between them dominated the headlines during the Wizards-Cavaliers first-round series in 2008.
It started with Stevenson, whose Washington team was eliminated by King James’ Cavs the previous two postseasons, calling James “overrated.” LeBron answered by saying responding to Stevenson would be like rap icon Jay-Z getting into it with one-hit wonder Soulja Boy.
And then it was really on.
Stevenson reached out to Soulja Boy after the Cavs took a 2-0 lead. After the creator of “Crank Dat” got the Verizon Center crowd crunk by doing his famous dance as his song blared over the loudspeakers, Stevenson drilled five 3-pointers while harassing James into an off night during a lopsided Washington win.
King James rolled his eyes at postgame questions about a rivalry with Stevenson. However, the Washington Post reported that James had Jay-Z record a song with lyrics that ripped Stevenson, a track that was played at LeBron’s party the next night at D.C. hotspot Love.
Stevenson was pretty steamed at the time, but he’s not sweating it now.
“I’m not worried about it,” Stevenson said. “But at the same time, you know it’s there.
“I think he already is fired up any time we’re on the court together. I think he’s worried about winning a championship, and so are we. It’s not about me and him. It’s about going out there and playing and bringing home a ring.”
The trash talking didn’t exactly help Stevenson’s cause during that series. James averaged 29.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 7.7 assists while the Cavs won in six, closing out the series with a triple-double in D.C."
DeShawn Stevenson Calls LeBron Overrated
"Averaging around 11 points a game and 40 percent from 3 in 2008, DeShawn decided he had the credentials to talk about LeBron and his game. After a regular season victory over Cleveland, in which there was plenty of trash talk between both LeBron and DeShawn, Stevenson took the battle to the media immediately after the match and said quote “Lebron is overrated. And you can say I said that”.
Apparently, DeShawn was angry over a comment LeBron had made to his former teammate Drew Gooden about Stevenson getting a lot of undeserved hype and this provoked him to say the words no NBA player has ever said publicly to the media ever again.
In my opinion, I really don’t believe present-day LeBron would care to much about comments made by a guy of Stevenson’s stature, but being only 23 years old at the time, James was understandably not having any of it. Instead of directly attacking Stevenson right back to the media, James decided to use a now classic analogy to discuss his perceived beef with DeShawn. When asked about the comments made, James pretty much sneak dissed Stevenson by saying “With DeShawn Stevenson it is kind of funny. It’s almost like Jay-Z saying something bad about Soulja Boy. There’s no comparison. Enough said.” "
