Why is Grammar so important? Grammar gives you the ability to take the longest and most complex sentences and reduce them to a clear idea of 5 or 6 words. It also gives you the ability to understand how the key words relate to each other to form a coherent idea. Grammar is made up of two parts, parts of speech and parts of a sentence. As you do your mcat prep, it’s really important to know how these work. Parts of speech tell you how a particular type of word functions. This critical in understanding questions and answers. When you get down to those two answers and you can’t tell which is the right one, knowing parts of speech, the difference in the types of words used in each answer, will tell you the exact difference between the two and why one answers the question and the other does not. It will give you an analytical framework of understanding so you won’t have to guess or just follow your gut instinct. Just as in diagnosing a patient, having an analytical framework is key to understanding a question. Understanding the parts of a sentence allows you to see how each part of the question is related to the key ideas in the text. It allows you to master mcat practice questions and the questions on the test. But grammar allow you to do more than just understand sentences and questions. When you master grammar it will also greatly improve your speed and retention of the key ideas. It can help put you at the top of the mcat score range.
