Caldara was born in Venice, the son of a violinist. He became a chorister at St Mark's in Venice, where he learned several instruments, probably under the instruction of Giovanni Legrenzi. Caldara is best known as a composer of operas, cantatas and oratorios. Several of his works have libretti by Metastasio (Italian poet and librettist). María Cristina Kiehr (born in Tandil, Argentina) is a soprano vocalist associated with Baroque music. After receiving her early musical training in Argentina, she moved in 1983 to Europe and studied under René Jacobs at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, specializing in the Baroque repertoire. She performs and records for the Harmonia Mundi label. Her recording of Maddalena ai Piedi di Cristo with René Jacobs won a Grammy award in 1997. The orchestra Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (Vocal & Instrumental Ensemble) was founded in 1933 at Basel of Switzerland. The orchestra boasts a world famous Department of Musicology which records and produces its own albums under the prestigious French recording label Harmonia Mundi and publishes specialist books, such as facsimile editions of scores from the Vatican Library and priceless codices from the National Library of Vienna.
