Maracana Stadium construction work continues

The country's authorities insist that all work will be completed by the deadline of February 2013. A roof will be installed and development of the immediate surrounding area needs to be completed. The Maracana will host three matches at the 2013 Confederations Cup and seven at the World Cup. It will also be the site of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Rio is also taking the opportunity to renovate the port, one of the most run down areas in the city. However reconstruction projects have attracted criticism. A museum and school are set to be demolished as work is carried out around the Maracana. There seems to be plenty of work to do if the deadline of February is set o be met.
