Travelling in Dhaka on public transport has become a dreadful experience for women, especially young girls.
Many women shy away from bus rides because of sheer negligence of minimum basic facilities, lack of protection, ignorance of the authority concerned and some also refuse to use the transport for fear of facing sexual and physical abuses.
It is commonly noticed that women in Dhaka face harassment in different tiers and continuously struggle to compete with men for limited space on the public buses. Seats for women in buses are too few to avoid the hassle.
There is no separate policy on giving priority or preference to women while riding a public bus. Men dominate as passengers in most of the public transport whereas almost equal numbers of women also queue on the streets to avail buses.
Environment Social and Development Organization (ESDO) Executive Director Siddika Sultana said, "The problems women face while travelling in Dhaka are poor accessibility to buses due to the insecure, unreliable, congested, overcrowded and unsafe vehicles. Absence of well-scheduled bus service, inadequate sidewalks and fear of sexual harassment also turn them away from availing buses,"
However, women rights activists expressing their opinion noted that the rape incidents and regular sexual harassment also stand as barriers to women's mobility.
They also noted that women often travel at odd periods (early mornings and late nights) which expose them to greater vulnerable situations. A few buses launched especially for women are a rare sight on Dhaka roads.
Khusi Kabir, Coordinator of Nijara Kori, noted that the urban transport issues of mobility, congestion, safety, and environmental aspects are becoming increasingly important and critical in Dhaka.
The rapid urbanization process, increasing numbers of vehicles, unsatisfactory transport policies, and mix of non-motorized vehicles with mechanised ones, have significantly aggravated traffic and environmental problems in Dhaka roads.
"As Bangladesh's society is highly segregated, women's access to social and economic opportunities and their mobility in public places are greatly compromised by the lack of an effective transport system," she said.
Available evidence suggests that women are facing multiple problems with the current public transport environment in Dhaka.
The fundamental attitude towards women's mobility is restrictive which narrows their scope of participation in employment, education and society in general.
When asked about the present situation of existing transport facilities in Dhaka city, a number of women passengers said that the transport service currently provided by the public and private buses are insecure, unreliable, congested, and unsafe.
