Live firings of Brimstone missile from Eurofighter Typhoon to continue as part of aircraft enhancements package. The first live firing of MBDA’s Brimstone air-to-surface missile from a Eurofighter Typhoon took place in July 2017 as part of significant package of work to enhance the capability of the aircraft. The ongoing trials, being conducted using the IPA (Instrumented Production Aircraft) 6 Typhoon, based out of BAE Systems’ Military Air & Information site at Warton, Lancashire, UK, are part of work to integrate the Phase 3 Enhancement (P3E) package for Eurofighter Typhoon, which will also deliver further weapons integration and mission system upgrades.  The P3E package forms part of Project Centurion – the programme to ensure a smooth transition of Tornado GR4 capabilities on to Eurofighter Typhoon for the Royal Air Force.  In total, nine live firings and nine jettison trials will be carried out over coming months, with support from the UK Ministry of Defence, MBDA, QinetiQ, Eurofighter GmbH and the Eurofighter Partner Companies – Airbus and Leonardo. Initial flight testing on Brimstone commenced in 2016, with carriage trials and vibration testing also having taken place out of BAE Systems’ Military Air & Information business in the UK. Eurofighter Typhoon is the most advanced new generation multi-role/swing-role combat aircraft currently available on the world market. The aircraft is subject to an extensive continuous upgrade programme. The MBDA Brimstone is a unique air–to-surface precision attack weapon. Already demonstrated from land, sea, fast jet, helicopters and remotely piloted aircraft, Brimstone is used for the engagement of fast moving and manoeuvring targets, proving ideal for operations in collaterally constrained environments.
