A live-action The Lion King movie is coming and we’ve got the details for you right now! Move over Mowgli, there’s a new king of the jungle coming. Following a somewhat cryptic tweet from Jon Favreau this morning, Walt Disney Studios has officially announced that The Jungle Book director will helm a live-action version of their hit animated classic, The Lion King. Released in 1994, The Lion King remains one of the highest grossing and most beloved animated films of all-time with a lifetime global box office of around $970 million. The film is not only a classic thanks to its timeless story, but also for its Oscar winning score and soundtrack that includes Elton John’s “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”. This will be just the latest Disney animated film to get the live-action treatment following the success of Maleficent, Cinderella and most recently Favreau’s The Jungle Book, which has earned around $965 million at the worldwide box office. Next year will bring a live-action version of Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson and like that film, the new The Lion King will feature songs from the film along with new tunes. For those of you unfamiliar with The Lion King, it tells the story of a lion cub named “Simba”, who is tricked into thinking he caused the death of his father by his evil Uncle, “Scar”. After learning life lessons from a meerkat and warthog, he sets out to reclaim his father’s legacy. In addition to being a hit animated feature, it also became a successful Broadway musical. While doing a live-action version of a movie that consists solely of talking animals seems like a huge undertaking, Favreau is the obvious person for the job thanks to his work on The Jungle Book. Of course, that film was anchored by a young, human star and there will be absolutely no human characters in The Lion King. As for when we could potentially see The Lion King in theaters, the studio has not set a release date and Favreau is already working on a Jungle Book sequel, so it will be interesting to see which project makes it to production first. So, who out there is excited to see a live-action The Lion King movie and which would you rather see first; The Lion King or a Jungle Book sequel? Head down to the comments and let us know and then click here to find out what other Disney animated movies we’d like see get the live-action treatment.
