The United Nations and the Libyan authorities on 10 January 2012 signed an agreement establishing the legal framework under which the UN mission set up last year to support the country's post-conflict reconstruction efforts will operate. The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) is tasked with assisting the Libyan authorities in restoring public security and the rule of law, promoting inclusive political dialogue and national reconciliation, and in helping the authorities embark on the drafting of a new constitution and on laying the foundation for elections. The mission is overseen by the UN Department of Political Affairs, which provides guidance and operational assistance. http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=40914&Cr=libya&Cr1= http://www.un.org/wcm/content/site/undpa/main/activities_by_region/africa/libya http://unsmil.unmissions.org/
