(21 Jan 2019) KISSING AND FIGHTING: VIOLA DAVIS, MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ AND DANIEL KALUUYA REMEMBER FIRST AUDITIONS Despite not landing the part she went for, Viola Davis' first audition was a memorable one. "Oh my God," she exclaimed, when casting her mind back. "I remember one of my auditions only because it was one of my favorites. I think I was auditioning for Queen Margaret in one of the Henrys. I think. And I kissed the casting director on the lips. He was a man, he was actually really quite cute too. I think that's probably why I did it," she laughed. "But within the scene she kisses a man and he's sort of horrified and the casting director was, yup, was horrified also. So that kept me in the scene. And I was crying in the scene too which means that my nose was dripping and I smacked him dead on his lips. And then I did it twice," she added. Davis' latest role is in Steve McQueen's "Widows," alongside Michelle Rodriguez and Elizabeth Debicki as women who band together after their husbands are killed in a robbery gone wrong. Daniel Kaluuya also stars as a henchman and, much like co-star Davis, he didn't have much success with his first audition. "Yeah. It was alright," he said of the experience. "But then I kept on calling him every day saying, 'Have I got it yet?' because I didn't have an agent. Like, 'Have I got it, have I got it?' 'Oh no, you'll hear next week.' 'Have I got it? Have I got it?' And then I didn't get it. Yeah. That was interesting," he smiled. Despite her lack of acting experience, Michelle Rodriguez was more successful than her co-stars with her first audition, but she employed an alternate skill set to get the part. "There was a bunch of girls, like 250 chicks. Yeah, I remember that and I'm like, 'I quit high school when I was 16, took my GED and I've never taken any acting classes. But I can beat a lot of these girls up, you know. Does that count?' It was so funny," she smiled. "Widows" was released in the U.K. in November.
