Follow us on Twitter @letstalk_cars The Seoul-based Kia Motors Corporation amid much speculation, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Andhra Pradesh government on Thursday for setting up a car manufacturing plant in Anantapuramu district. The tie-up is expected to give a major boost to the state's efforts to emerge as an industrial manufacturing hub. With Kia Motors, Hyundai will look to target at the entry level segment in India and rival Maruti Suzuki. 1. The plant, to come up on a 600-acre site at Penukonda, about 75 km from Anantapuramu, will be the South Korean company's first unit in India and the seventh in the world. 2. The work on the plant would commence in September, 2017. 3. Mass production due to begin in 2019, with 300,000-unit annual capacity. 4. Kia plans to produce a strategic compact sedan and compact SUV especially for the Indian market at the new plant. 5. Kia plans to commence local sales of cars produced at the new facility towards the end of 2019. 6. Although Kia Motors has not revealed their product line-up for India, we expect the Seoul-based company to bring in their popular Picanto, Sportage and Rio to India along with a 'strategic' compact sedan and a compact SUV, especially for the Indian market.
