Kia Ceed vs Volkswagen Golf vs Honda Civic vs Opel Astra vs Renault Megane
The #Ceed range is powered by a wide choice of powertrains developed to meet diverse buyer needs. Petrol options include an updated version of #Kia's popular 1.0-litre T-GDi (Turbocharged Gasoline Direct injection) engine. The engine produces 120ps and 172 Nm torque, with emissions from 125 g/km, or 122 g/km with the optional ECO Pack (WLTP combined, converted back to NEDC 2.0).
A new 'Kappa' 1.4-litre T-GDi power unit replaces the earlier 1.6-litre GDI engine and produces 140ps, 4 per cent more than its predecessor despite its lower displacement. The engine's turbocharger ensures a wider torque band than the earlier 1.6-litre engine, making it more responsive in a wider range of driving conditions - while also reducing emissions. 242 Nm torque is available from 1,500 to 3,200 rpm, with combined emissions (on the WLTP cycle converted back to NEDC 2.0) as low as 125 g/km when fitted with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
#Volkswagen has enhanced the EA211 TSI engine family; the new turbocharged petrol direct-injection engines celebrate its debut in the Golf. It's roll-out begins with the "1.5 TSI Evo" - a 110 kW/150 PS four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with Active Cylinder Management (ACT) and efficient common rail direct injection technology. The new TSI is particularly agile and refined; it develops its maximum torque of 250 Nm at low revs of just 1,500 rpm. NEDC fuel consumption: 4.9 l/100 km (equating to 110 g/km CO2). A BlueMotion version of the 1.5 TSI Evo with 96 kW/130 PS is also in preparation. The NEDC fuel consumption of this version will be 4.6 l/100 km (104 g/km CO2). Among the special characteristics of these high-tech engines are a new combustion cycle (derived from the Miller cycle) and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG). The engine develops its maximum torque of 200 Nm at just 1,400 rpm. As a world premiere, the 1.5 TSI Evo with 130 PS also offers an extended coasting function when the engine is deactivated - completely shutting down the TSI when the driver releases the accelerator. Such engine deactivation has only been seen in conjunction with hybrid vehicles up to now, as systems like the electromechanical power steering and the brake servo still need to be supplied with energy even when the Evo motor is switched off.
In LX, EX and EX-L Navi models which are designed to operate on regular unleaded fuel, the 1.5-liter 16-valve DOHC direct-injected turbocharged powerplant is rated at 174 horsepower at 5,500 (6MT) or 6,000 (CVT) rpm. Torque output is set at 162 lb-ft. between 1,700 and 5,500 rpm when equipped with the CVT. When equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission (LX) the torque rating increases to 167 lb-ft.
The highly efficient engines and transmissions, along with exceptional aerodynamics and low running resistance, result in impressive performance and fuel efficiency. The #Civic Hatchback is rated by the EPA at 30/39/33 mpg (city/highway/combined) when equipped with the standard 6-speed manual transmission (LX and Sport). When equipped with the available Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), the Civic Hatchback in LX, EX and EX-L Navi trims is rated by the EPA at 31/40/34 mpg. Sport and Sport Touring trims equipped with the available Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) are rated at 30/36/32 mpg.
The new #Astra with the 74 kW/100 hp 1.4-liter all-aluminum gasoline engine under the hood will be available for a very affordable entry-level price of 17,260 euros (all following prices RRP including VAT in Germany). Therefore, it does not cost a single cent more than its predecessor did. The 77 kW/105 hp three-cylinder 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo is available for only 700 euros more. When combined with Easytronic 3.0, the automated manual gearbox, the new Astra only emits 96 grams of CO2 per kilometer and consumes a mere 4.2 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle, making it one of the leading gasoline cars in the compact class in fuel economy and eco-friendliness.
The new Megane will be available with six highly-efficient engines from launch - three ENERGY dCi diesels delivering 90, 110 or 130hp, and three TCe petrol units with outputs of 100, 130 or 205hp. The EDC dual-clutch automatic transmission will be offered with the dCi 110 (six-speed) and the TCe 130 (seven-speed) engines. The seven-speed EDC is standard with the TCe 205 unit in the GT.
