As of November 2019: My name is Brandon and I'm slowly going blind (due to a genetic disease called Choroideremia).CHM or Choroideremia is an X-linked genetic disease that mainly causes men to slowly lose their eyesight, eventually leading to complete blindness. Some women are also affected by this disease but for the vast majority, their 2nd copy of the X chromosome prevents CHM from spreading in their eyes. Cutting edge genetic surgery is in clinical human trials and patients are showing extremely promising results. Nearly all men receiving this genetic therapy have proven the disease has stopped spreading, while in a few cases have even reversed some of the lost eyesight obtained over the years. I'm currently enrolled at the University of Utah's Moran Eye Center to potentially qualify for one of these treatments. This research study will take course over the next year. At the conclusion of the study, they will be able to tell if my eyes are healthy enough to proceed with the experimental surgery.
