From Crooked Door Storytelling founder, Genevieve Waller: During this four-week summer program, through art and storytelling activities, "The Otters" (1st and 2nd graders) explored a variety of tales from cultures around the world. At camp's end, they presented two original tales in the Japanese kamishibai (paper theater) tradition: "The Otters' Party and The Storm," a folktale, and "Mysterious Ireland,"a fairy tale. Kamishibai is a storytelling technique popularized in the 1930s-'50s in Japan. Kamishibai men would ride their bikes through neighborhoods and villages selling homemade candy from the back of their bikes to children. When the sweets were gone, children would gather around the bicycle and the "Kamishibai Man" would entertain them with illustrated stories via a portable stage.
Now: "Mukashi, mukashi"... or "Once upon a time"...
