History of Damien Foundation
The Damien Foundation was not made in a day. Various associations in Belgium began collecting money for persons suffering from leprosy. Also, each year, they took to organizing a World Leprosy Day. Then finally in 1964, all the associations joined up and created an association called Friends of Father Damien (FATHER DAMIEN DE VEUSTER WAS A PRIEST who unselfishly served Leprosy affected persons in Hawaii in the 1800’s). He was born in Belgium but came to Hawaii as a missionary in his 20’s. His most noted effort was serving the people with Leprosy on the Hawaiian Island of Molokai.). Later it changed its name to Damien Foundation.
In Bangladesh, Damien Foundation (DF) started its journey to serve leprosy patients in 6 districts of Bangladesh in 1972 and thus it has been more than three decades since the start of its journey in reaching the people affected by Leprosy in Bangladesh. In the beginning, DF fully concentrated on the elimination of Leprosy, and later on, since 1991 Tuberculosis (TB) Control has been included as the other major component considering the size of TB burden in Bangladesh. The organization is now involved in the control of Tuberculosis and further management of Leprosy in close collaboration with the National Tuberculosis Control & Leprosy Elimination Program (NTLEP), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoH&FW), Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. This collaboration is based on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the GoB and 11 NGOs in 1994 and renewed afterwards with 9 NGOs. As per MoU, each NGO partner is allocated to implement the programme in a defined geographical area and GoB agreed to ensure supply of essential drugs, equipments (e.g. microscopes), laboratory reagents, other consumables, recording and reporting forms, registers etc. The Damien Foundation Bangladesh works as a non–political organization duly registered with NGO Affairs Bureau, Govt. of Bangladesh, under the Foreign Donations (Voluntary Activities) Regulations Ordinance 1978.
Damien Foundation (DF), a Belgian International NGO, is involved in the control of Tuberculosis and Leprosy in close collaboration with the Government of Bangladesh in 14 districts of greater Mymensingh, Rajshahi & Faridpur regions. Since 1972 the DF is one of the major international agencies contributing to Tuberculosis and Leprosy control in Bangladesh.
The Damien Foundation is looking to fill up the following positions for its Dhaka Coordinating Office, Rajshahi Project and Mymensingh Projects, under the NFR of GFATM fund for its project period from January 2018 to December 2020:
