John Brown’s Body is a film based on the life of the radical, pre-Civil War abolitionist, John Brown. His story is compelling and relevant for many reasons, but he is best known as a religiously-inspired man who fought and died in an effort to abolish slavery, which he believed to be a crime against God and humanity. Brown is one of history's most controversial and misunderstood characters. He is regarded equally as either a madman or a martyr, as a murderer or a genuine hero. In the late 1850s, he and his ragtag guerrilla group embarked on a righteous crusade against slavery that was carried out with shocking violence, and his execution in 1859 set off a chain of events that directly led to the Civil War. The film takes place in Brown’s jail cell in the pre-dawn hours before he is to be hanged and it covers the momentous events of his life that delivered him to that point.
