Johann Philipp Kirnberger (1721-83): Ach Gott und Herr!

Unter Kirnbergers Choralbearbeitungen eine der spektakuläreren. Ihre Heiterkeit und Eleganz steht in einem Gegensatz zum depressiven Charakter beider Kirchenlieder (Ach Gott und Herr und Ich dank dir schon), unter deren Titel dieses Stück im 18. Jahrhundert im Druck erschien. Interessant ist, daß dieses Werk, das nur auf der Orgel oder allenfalls dem Pedal-Clavichord spielbar und in beiden genannten zeitgenössischen Veröffentlichungen auch ausdrücklich für die Orgel bestimmt ist, im Pedal das d1 erfordert (auch zur Entstehungszeit bereits oft gegeben), im Manual aber das d3 -- das in Mitteleuropa auf fast keiner damaligen Orgel vorhanden war, vielmehr ging der Manualumfang in aller Regel nur bis c3. Kirnberger selbst konnte das Stück indes auf der Hausorgel seiner Gönnerin Anna Amalia von Preußen spielen (als sogenannte Amalien-Orgel heute in Berlin-Karlshorst: http://www.amalien-orgel.de/ ; vgl. auch die Darstellung am Schluß meiner Einspielung einer anderen Kirnberger-Choralbearbeitung, Es ist das Heil uns kommen her. Its serenity and elegance are rather at odds with the lugubrious character of both of the hymns under whose title this piece was respectively published in the 18th c. (Ach Gott und Herr and Ich dank dir schon). Interestingly this piece can only be played on the organ (or a pedal clavichord), and both of the publications mentioned explicitly assign it to the organ. Yet it not only requires d1 in the pedals (which at the time was indeed often present), but d3 in the manuals, which at the time very few organs in central Europe would have offered. Normally the manuals only went up to c3.
