Jeff Bezos to spend a fortune on space travel
Jeff Bezos to spend his Amazon fortune to make space travel cheaper
The world’s richest man, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has bold idea of helping humanity to reach for the stars, he fully intends to spend some of his vast fortune to finance rapid expansion of BlueOrigin’s mission to establish a foothold in space, be it LEO, the Moon and who knows he might join Elon Musk and since the two are good friends might even finance Elon’s Mars project.
Mr Bezos revealed the extent of his space travel ideas in an interview with Mathias Döpfner of Axel Springer, “I’m pursuing this work because I believe that if we don’t, we will eventually end up with a civilisation of stasis which I find very demoralising,” he said in the interview.
Just the other day, BlueOrigin launched same New Shepard vehicle for the 8th time, successfully, reading the rocket for space tourist if all goes well possibly even this year.
Jef Bezos is keen to see humans returning to Moon in not too distant future, and ideally space based colonies that could house millions of people work and live in space, just like in Star Trek.
As a big fan of the show Jeff Bezos grew on an idea of humanity in space and colonizing entire solar system. “Take the scenario where you move out into the solar system. The solar system can easily support a trillion humans “And if we had a trillion humans, we would have a thousand Einsteins and a thousand Mozarts and unlimited – for all practical purposes – resources and solar power.“That’s the world that I want my great-grandchildren’s great-grandchildren to live in.”
To that end, Mr Bezos said he believes Blue Origin is his “most important” work, far more important than Amazon, he sees Amazon as vehicle to pursue his goals, just like Elon Musk’s goals are also visionary and space based.
Jeff Bezos plans to use Amazon’s resources to finance future in Space, “The only way that I can see to deploy this much financial resource is by converting my Amazon winnings into space travel. That is basically it,”.
Currently, Jeff Bezos uses proceeds from Amazon, around $1.2 billion per year to finance BlueOrigin, and hopes to send first space tourist on their voyage of a lifetime by end of this year or early next. New Glenn Rocket, which will rival SpaceX’s own Falcon Heavy and perhaps even BFR, will be ready by 2020, and the rocket will be re-usable, just like SpaceX’s own Falcon 9 and soon to be BFR.
Jeff Bezos is betting on New Glenn rocket and knows it’ll be the rocket to enable easy access to space, just like Falcon 9 rocket, after all Jeff Bezos is betting on long term and has some pretty big ideas, to quote the man “This civilisation I’m talking about of getting comfortable living and working in space and having millions of people, and then billions of people and then finally a trillion people in space – you can’t do that with space vehicles that you use once and then throw away.“It’s a ridiculous, costly way to get into space.”
I am very excited and hopeful of what lay ahead, humanity’s future at least if Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are concerned is among the stars, I like that idea very much.
