Jazz Guitar: THREE Ways to Learn Your Fretboard - what are you missing?
In this video, jazz guitar beginners (and perhaps intermediate) will discover three ways to learn to find notes, scales, chords, arpeggios and melodies on the instrument.
As a rule of thumb, I personally always recommend beginners spend a great deal of their practice time learning the notes on the instrument. It just makes sense, doesn't it?! A musician should know what notes he / she is playing. :-)
We can do so, not only by memorizing where the notes are, but also by studying scales, arpeggios, tunes, chords, etc. We can look at the aforementioned guitar materials in three different and very interesting ways:
1- Positions: as described in Modern Method for Guitar
2- Horizontal: up and down the fretboard on 1 or 2 strings
3- Diagonal: blend of 1 and 2 above. "Up and across" the fingerboard.
So this is NOT how to improvise or comp or learn tunes. Just the meat and potatoes here, no fancy recipe.
This is simply: "How can I get over the hump of learning WHAT is on this instrument, in terms of note names?" And also: "How can I identify common structure like chords, triads, scales (etc.) on this darn thing?!?"
I have to admit, I have made lots of progress just practicing basic materials (like the above) without even trying to apply the stuff in soloing. If you practice it for long enough, it is going to come out through improvisation, in due time ...
Have fun!
