* 1st off, the 2 QBs set to take over our program before the arrival of Kiffin in 2014 was Cooper Bateman, and David Cornwell, high 4 star recruits that matched Bama's traditional O, but Lane was brought in to upgrade and revitalize our old school, Dinosaur, BASIC Offense. Kiffin went a different route with his QBs, choosing more modern, mobile, athletic QBs. 5th year senior Blake Sims, was chosen as his starter. * During Lane's 1st year, he landed 5 star recruit Blake Barnette, the ideal QB for his system. Giving Barnette time to develop, 5th year Senior, Jake Coker (more of Bama's traditional QBs), whom joined the team the same year as Kiffin , takes start in his second year. If Kiffin never came in 2014, we would have probably seen Coker 2 years, giving Bateman and Cornwell time to develop. * After winning a championship in his 2nd year, Kiffin has to choose his 3rd signal caller in 3 years. He has his golden egg on the bench, as a red shirt Freshman, but rarely do you want to play QBs THIS EARLY! You want to wait till his 3rd or 4th year, but of course, these new era kids will threaten to transfer asap if they feel they can't PLAY IMMEDIATELY! * Fast forward to game 1, season 3, and rumors are, COOPER BATEMAN (now playing WR at Utah), the more athletic of the QBs that were already enrolled before Kiffin's arrival will start, vs USC. Instead, Blake Barnette enters the field as starter. And after a slow start, we turn to TRUE FRESHMAN Jalen Hurts, who dazzled on lookers months earlier with his legs while lining up as Deshaun Watson in practice while preparing for the Ship. * Jalen, though fumbling on his very first snap, was a safe choice, in a close game, even as a TRUE FRESHMAN, because he isn't under the pressure of LEARNING or going through the PROGRESSIONS of a true passer. His legs were his primary weapons, making him a nice and safe option while continuing to develop our QBs. Plus, no one truly knows of Jalen's lack of passing ability just yet. Blake came back in to throw sum great passes, finishing 5/6 for 100 yards, while Jalen finished 6/11 for 118. * WITH THE DEFENSE LOOKING LIKE 1 of the BEST OF ALL TIME, we continue to play Hurts, in a safe role, while continuing to develop Barnette, especially while there isn't much need at QB play just yet. Plus the opponents haven't locked in totally on Jalen's passing ineffectiveness, a flaw that doesn't stop Jalen from becoming a FAN FAVORITE in Tuscaloosa. * Because of this, all the other QBs transfer, which i predicted, unknowing Barnette would be one of those transfer as well, leaving us stuck with a one dimensional "athlete" playing QB, right around the time other teams are figuring out how to play him. With us WINNING, and WINNING, largely in part to our D, we are able to beat most teams even with meager offensive stats, especially in BIG GAMES. Jalen's mechanics and true QB identity isn't questioned much, and he win's SEC Offensive Player of the Year, in year where the 3 Pre Season Favorites (Fournette, Dobbs, Chubb), all have a injury riddled year, and SEC Passing Leaders Chad Kelly and Trevor Knight both go down with season ending Injuries. The awards shifts to Kamryn Pettway, but he gets injured vs Vandy late in the season, now placing Alabama LT Cam Robinson, and LSU Lineman Ethan Pocic, as potential winners, but is later rewarded to Jalen Hurts. Winning this award as a freshman, whether his main competition was injured or not, was BIG. A freshman hadn't won this since Hershal Walker, making Jalen even more famous in Title Town. Along with this award, he was now being mentioned in Hesiman consideration, simply for being flashy signal caller, on the #1 Team. This made it hard for Saban and company to pull the switch 2nd season, even with lack luster passing stats and one of biggest TRUE QB RECRUITS in Alabama History now on the Bench! PS! In a perfect world, i would rather TUA come in his 2nd, or 3rd year, IF, we had a true QB to hold us down in the meanwhile. YOU JUST DON't WANT TO CRUSH A YOUNG QBs CONFIDENCE, BY RUSHING THEM, EVEN WHEN ALL THEY WANT TO DO IS PLAY! But we didn't have that luxury, every team knows how to stop a Jalen Hurt's Offense, but Most don't have the personnel to do so.
