There have been no reports of casualties as of yet. Daylight revealed destroyed buildings in what Israel said was a metalworks used to make mortar bombs that would be fired at nearby settlements. Palestinians showed fragments of Israeli missiles. The Israeli Ministry of Defence confirmed the attack against Palestinian positions, claiming the areas were being used to build mortars bombs. The new wave of violence started on Saturday with Israeli tanks firing shells and heavy machine-gun fire at security outposts in the Gaza strip, killing a major in the Palestinian security forces. Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon on Saturday canceled a planned trip to the United States, diminishing hopes for new momentum toward negotiations with the Palestinians.
