Is the GTX 1070 Alienware X51's Dream GPU?

My thoughts regarding the GTX 1070 and whether or not it will be a suitable upgrade for the Alienware X51! Read descrption. UPDATE: See my GTX 1070 X51 Upgrade Videos! IMPORTANT INFORMATION: I ONLY RECOMMEND THE INSTALLATION OF THE GTX 1070 IN ALIENWARE X51 MACHINES THAT HAVE THE REVISION 2 POWER BOARD. The GTX 1070 is reported to use a single 8-Pin power connector. This poses a problem for the Alienware X51 as it uses 2 6-Pin power connectors by default. There should be a workaround by using a dual 6 pin to 8 pin power adapter that should come in the box with your new graphics card. WARNING: A GTX 1080 will be too risky for the R2/R3 X51. A 180 watt TDP GPU would be pushing the limits of the X51 power board. So be careful! :) PLEASE NOTE: ANY UPGRADES OR MODIFICATIONS PERFORMED ON MY ALIENWARE X51 ARE DONE AT MY OWN RISK. I RECOMMEND REFERENCE NON OVERCLOCKED SINGLE BLOWER FAN GRAPHICS CARDS TO BE INSTALLED IN THE X51. IF YOU INSTALL A GRAPHICS CARD THAT CONSUMES MORE THAN 150 WATTS (R1 x51) AND 165/170 WATTS (R2 X51) THEN YOU ARE TAKING A RISK AND MAY EXPERIENCE SYSTEM INSTABILTY. IF YOU INSTALL NON REFERENCE AFTER MARKET ACTIVE DUAL OR TRIPLE COOLING GRAPHICS CARDS THEN YOU RISK OVERHEATING YOUR X51 AND DRAMATICALLY INCREASING THE OVERALL TEMPERATURE WITHIN YOUR ALIENWARE X51 CASE. A 9.5 inch GPU will fit inside the X51 without the need for modifications to the inside of the case. A 10 inch card will fit provided you remove the metal grill that sits in front of and protects the front air intake fan. All you need is a knife or a flat head screw driver to simply pop out the 4 black plastic caps that hold the metal grill in place. Once again, I do not recommend trying to install a 10.5 inch GPU in the X51. I had to remove the front air intake fan and relocate it to another position in the X51 case in order to install the 10.5 inch graphics card. Fan Profile Stuff: NOTE: Play around with the profile curves to your own liking. The objective is to reduce the running temperature of your graphics card under gaming load. This particular profile will make your X51 a lot louder so you might want to make a less aggressive fan profile. Every card is a little bit different too in terms of power consumption, cooling performance, and so on. Use this video as a guide that assists you in creating a profile that is best for your particular graphics card. It's a balancing act between keeping the temps in check and the noise levels tolerable. The good news is the graphics cards are becomming more power efficient so X51 fan profiles like this may not be necessary on more power efficient graphics cards.
