Ireland: Amputee football tournament kicks off in Limerick

The Irish Amputee Football Association is hosting an international football tournament -- the PaddyPower Amputee Cup. Taking place on Saturday and Sunday in Limerick, the tournament features 116 players and staff from six countries. Amputee football is based on the same rules as the two-legged version. The only differences -- outfield players may have two hands but only one foot, while goalkeepers may have two legs, but only one hand. The game is played without the use of prosthesis, with players using metal forearm crutches. There are seven players in a team. The countries participating in the 2013 tournament are Ireland, Germany, Poland, Belgium, England and the Netherlands. Many are hoping that amputee football will be selected as an official discipline for the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Brazil.
