SQL Server developer edition is a full fledged version of SQL Server. Its way more than what you get with SQL Server express. You can even hook this version up to Team Foundation Server and get started with SSRS reporting. Today I go over how to download and install SQL Server 2017 Developer Edition for free. There are multiple ways to get the developer's edition of SQL Server, but this is by far the fastest. I highly recommend you uninstall any versions of SQL Server before installing this one. It's ideal to only have one version of SQL Server installed. Since most code from older databases will still work in the current version, there really is no reason to have an older version installed. Once SQL Server has installed, download and install SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). After SQL Server 2017 Developer Edition has been installed and management studio is up and running we'll need some sample databases. Go over to Itzik Ben-Gan's website http://tsql.solidq.com/books/source_code/ and download any of the sample DB's. Be sure to extract the files from the zipped folder. Open and run the source code to create the sample databases. Follow the video and you won't have any issues getting a SQL Server 2017 environment set up!
